Why did you develop a new Aboriginal Heritage Register?
The previous Aboriginal Heritage Register technology was unstable and no longer fit for purpose. It required replacement to service the increasing needs of Tasmania’s Aboriginal heritage management.
What is the Aboriginal Heritage Register?
The Aboriginal Heritage Register is a database of known Aboriginal heritage places and sites which are of significance to the Aboriginal people of Tasmania. There are over 13,500 known places and sites of significance currently listed on the register.
What makes the new Aboriginal Heritage Register better?
The new Aboriginal Heritage Register replaces the current email submission process and Property Search website with an online central hub, streamlining the process.
This modern, centralised online register provides a more robust and efficient system for Tasmanian Aboriginal heritage information access and management.
When will the new Aboriginal Heritage Register be available?
The new Aboriginal Heritage Register is now available online.
How has the process changed?
Previously, applicants had to fill out multiple forms and email them to Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania. The new Aboriginal Heritage Register provides an online central hub that replaces the existing forms and combines with the Aboriginal Heritage Property Search website.
Will this affect my current submissions with Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania?
Any email submission that was received by Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania before 9:00 AM Monday 6 July 2026 will be processed using the previous methods.
What if my co-worker is away and I need to view their submission?
Please contact aboriginal@heritage.tas.gov.au for assistance.
Can I still use the Property Search website?
Yes. The Property Search website is now part of the new Aboriginal Heritage Register. You need to provide an email address for a Property Search, so that the results can be sent to you.
Do I have to create a user account to use the Aboriginal Heritage Register?
No, you do not need to create a user account to do a Property Search to check for Aboriginal Heritage, or to Report a Site.
To use the Request for Advice (previously called a Desktop Review) and Submit a Permit Application tools, you will need to create a user account with an email address.
To access tools such as Request for Data or Submit an Assessment Report, you can apply for Authorised Access.
What is Authorised Access?
Registered Users can apply for Authorised Access and become an Authorised User.
This gives the user access to further tools, and the ability to request data from the register’s database. You can apply for Authorised Access under the following categories: Aboriginal Person, Academic, Consultant (Aboriginal Heritage Officer or Archaeologist), or Industry.
Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania reviews and approves applications for Authorised Access.

Can the Aboriginal community get direct access to the Aboriginal Heritage Register database?
The Aboriginal Heritage Register’s database contains culturally sensitive information and is not publicly available. Aboriginal Community members can choose to register for Authorised Access as an Authorised User and submit a Request for Data.
Aboriginal Heritage Tasmania will continue to operate according to advice from the Aboriginal Heritage Council to assess Requests for Data and to improve data accessibility where possible for the Tasmanian Aboriginal community.
