Consultation Feedback Report - Aboriginal Heritage Act 1975

What we heard from you

Thirty-nine written submissions were received in response to the discussion paper.

The responses came from interested members of the public (four); Aboriginal community organisations and groups (five); local government (ten); Government Business Enterprises (three); industry groups and others (15). Comments were received from two Tasmanian Government agencies.


Common themes from the submissions

  • The Act needs to be clear on its objective and purpose
  • Education can play a significant role in improving outcomes for the protection of Aboriginal heritage
  • Aboriginal people should have a greater role in managing Aboriginal heritage
  • The Act needs to be clear on who are the owners and custodians of Aboriginal heritage
  • The Act needs to connect better with broader planning and approvals processes
