Australia has confirmed its first detections of H5 bird flu.

H5 bird flu has not been detected in Tasmania.
This is the first time the globally circulating H5 bird flu strain has been detected in Australia.
The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania has been working closely with range of stakeholders to prepare for the expected arrival of the disease.
Australia has well-established national response arrangements in place to respond to emergency animal diseases, including bird flu.
If Australia experiences a H5 bird flu incursion, there will be a rapid and coordinated national response led by the Department of Agriculture, Fisheries and Forestry (DAFF), with state and territory governments leading response activities within their borders.
Tasmania is also well prepared for emergencies. An outbreak in Tasmania will be managed through a whole of government response.
Tasmanians are asked to stay vigilant for signs of disease but should not touch sick or dead animals.
If you see sick or dead birds or other wildlife:
AVOID contact.
RECORD what you see - the type of animal, the number of animals, the location and take photos or video.
REPORT by calling the Emergency Animal Disease hotline as soon as possible on 1800 675 888 or through the online reporting form.
