Draft Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy released for public consultation

What should Tasmania’s waste and resource recovery priorities look like for the next five years? The Waste and Resource Recovery Board is asking you to help shape the answer.

The Board has released a consultation draft of the Tasmanian Waste and Resource Recovery Strategy 2026–2031 and feedback from industry, government and the broader community is welcomed.

The draft builds on the foundations of the current strategy and introduces some significant shifts:

  • A statewide infrastructure roadmap and investment plan to guide where levy funding goes.

  • Stronger data, innovation and communication frameworks.

  • The circular economy positioned as both a foundation and an outcome.

  • Continued focus on organic waste, construction and demolition waste, and commercial and industrial waste as priority streams.

The draft was shaped by targeted consultation with industry peak bodies, Regional Waste Organisations, local and state government agencies, and other key stakeholders. To date, over $30 million of $37 million in collected landfill levy has been reinvested in infrastructure, local government support, strategic partnerships, and new business and job creation.

Submissions close 10 July 2026. Download the draft strategy and find out how to provide feedback at the Waste and Resource Recovery Board’s website.

All submissions will be reviewed and a ‘what we heard’ summary will be published before the final strategy is released.
