The Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania (NRE Tas) has commissioned the Institute for Marine and Antarctic Studies (IMAS) to undertake dedicated population monitoring of Maugean skate in Macquarie Harbour since 2021.
The data collected over the last four years builds on previous research and monitoring programs undertaken in the harbour between 2012 and 2018.
The latest survey results show the relative abundance of the skate has increased for a second consecutive year, and in 2024 was similar to the baseline measurement in 2014.
The analysis presented in this report also shows that increasing numbers of young Maugean skates continue to survive hatching and early development to join the adult population. While not at levels seen prior to 2010, this allays concerns of a lack or absence of juveniles in the wild population.
While these results are a positive step forward there is still more work to be done to support the recovery of this unique species.
The Tasmanian Government has provided $2.1 million in funding to support actions identified in the Conservation Action Plan for the Maugean Skate in 2023-24.
This is in addition to the previous funding the Government has provided since 2014 of over $2.5 million as well as in-kind support for research into the skate.
The monitoring report is available on the IMAS website.
