The next round of the Heritage Grants Scheme will be open for applications from 2 September 2024.
The previous round of grants saw more than $1.1 million dollars provided to 31 heritage properties across Tasmania.
This new round of grants will see a total of $1.3 million available to support owners and custodians of heritage listed places to undertake restoration and activation activities.
Feedback from round one has informed the second round of these grants, with the guidelines now strengthened and simplified, making it easier for heritage property owners to apply.
Owners of heritage listed properties can apply for small grants of $5,000 to $20,000 to preserve, repair or restore their properties where the heritage significance might be at risk.
Large grants of $20,000 to $200,000 are available to support heritage owners, and skills development organisations as well as community groups to activate heritage properties and engage community support for Tasmania’s built heritage.
As part of the large grants, applications are invited for projects that repurpose and activate underutilised buildings to help drive visitor demand, support not-for-profit owners undertake heritage conservation for buildings that are publicly accessible.
Applications are also encouraged for these larger grants for projects that support the growth and capacity development of the heritage skills trade sector as well as support events, projects and interpretation initiatives that provide opportunities for the community to engage with heritage sites.
Heritage plays a big role in Tasmania. Our built heritage is more than just timber, sandstone, bricks and mortar – it underpins a vital component of the state’s economy. Heritage is a major drawcard for visitors, it supports the retention of valuable building and conservation skills in the state and adds significant value to land and property values and the Tasmanian brand.
Built heritage contributes nearly $1 billion to Tasmania’s Gross State Product with nearly half a million visitors coming to Tasmania annually specifically attracted by our heritage assets. More than 5,000 jobs are supported by the existence of the sector in Tasmania.
