Supporting Tasmanian Farmers to Be Future Ready

Tasmanian farmers are facing complex challenges ranging from the long-term impacts of drought and climate variability, to shifting markets and financial pressures. Despite this, farmers also have the opportunity to take advantage of change. The Farm Business Resilience (FBR) program is being delivered across the state to help farm businesses build the skills and strategies they need to adapt and thrive.

Over 220 farmers from more than 140 businesses have already participated in the program and received training and coaching to develop their business plans. Many have cited climate adaptation, succession planning and profitability as key motivators for their participation. Evaluation of the Program to date has highlighted the value of practical mentoring, personalised plans, and peer learning opportunities offered through the program.

“The program helped me step back and see the big picture. I’ve gone from being tied to the farm every day to planning a future with more balance, resilience, and opportunity, for myself and my family,” said Brodey Hill, a dairy farmer from north-west Tasmania.

Zuleika Crowden reflected, “It was a turning point. We put our vision on paper, restructured the business, and created space for our family and the next generation. The farm is stronger, and so are we.”

By supporting farmers to take proactive steps toward risk management and business resilience, the FBR program is helping to future-proof Tasmania’s agricultural sector and build stronger rural communities.
