Mandatory eID for sheep and goats will be a requirement in Tasmania from 1 January 2025.
To help you transition to the new system we are providing financial support.
There will be 3 rounds of funding, each focused on different supply chain segments of the Tasmanian sheep and goat industry:
Grant round 1:
This round will provide eligible supply chain participants (other than sheep and goat producers) grants to install required eID scanning infrastructure.
Grant round 2:
This round will provide owners of sheep and goats rebates for their eID ear tags and leg bands.
Grant round 3:
This round will provide rebates for scanning devices required to scan eID tags, for eligible entities such as producers and show societies.
Electronic Identification Devices (eIDs) are a valuable, on-farm and off-farm traceability tool.
The key eID implementation dates are:
from 1 January 2025 all sheep and farmed goats born on or after this date must be fitted with a National Livestock Identification System (NLIS) accredited eID device before leaving their property of birth;
from 1 January 2025 movements of sheep and goats will be uploaded to the NLIS database; and
from 1 January 2027 all sheep and goats must be fitted with an accredited NLIS eID device before leaving a property, regardless of age.
More information can be found on the dedicated sheep and goat identification webpage.
