Tasmanian cat owners urged to check microchips

Tasmanian cat owners are urged to check their pet’s microchip registration provider, after news a registry company’s website may be shutting down.

The Cat Management Act 2009 (the Act) and Cat Management Regulations 2022 provide the control and management of cats through promoting responsible cat ownership. The Act requires that once a cat is microchipped, certain prescribed details are to be entered into a database and kept current.

HomeSafeID is a pet registry company that stores microchip data for many Tasmanian pets, particularly cats and dogs.

The Tasmanian Government is aware that HomeSafeID has provided advice on its webpage that it is likely to go offline in the future. This means cat owners whose cat microchip details are registered with HomeSafeID may be at risk of losing access to their pet’s microchip records.

If your cat’s microchip is registered with HomeSafeID, you are encouraged to check their website and you may wish to consider transferring your pet’s microchip registration to another registry.

It is important for cat owners to keep microchip details up to date so you can be reunited with your pet if it goes missing or is found. This is particularly important for cats, which are not required to be registered with their council.

If you don’t know your cat’s microchip registry, visit www.petaddress.com.au and enter your pet’s microchip number.
