Transforming groundwater management

The Tasmanian Groundwater Assessment Project will help us better understand groundwater water use and its relationship to the amount of water entering the groundwater system. It will also inform sustainable water management practices.

The first part of the project has developed a Groundwater Risk Assessment Tool and Management Framework which helps to assess groundwater risks in Tasmania.

The second part of the project will be undertaking field-based surveys of bores and groundwater users in the Smithton-Syncline area.

This work will help us:

  • understand groundwater use
  • confirm bore locations and details
  • assess the most effective groundwater management options for the future
  • ensure a sustainable supply of groundwater for those that rely on it

The Groundwater Assessment Project is jointly funded by the Tasmanian Government through the National Water Grid Fund. It is an initiative of the Rural Water Use Strategy.
