Agricultural and veterinary (Agvet) chemicals are important inputs for Tasmanian agriculture that assist in the production of sustainable, high-quality produce and livestock. Whilst providing many benefits, chemicals must be used responsibly to manage weeds, pests and disease to minimise any adverse effects associated with their use.
The Agvet Chemical Program regulates the use of agvet chemicals in Tasmania to minimise risks to human health, the environment, animal welfare and trade while protecting and enhancing market access and consumer confidence.
The Agvet Chemical Program administers commercial spray contractor and operator licensing, investigates spraying complaints and incidents, authorises the use of certain restricted products, coordinates residue surveillance and management programs and liaises with the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) as part of the National Registration Scheme.
