Legislation and Subordinate Legislation

Both the Commonwealth and State Governments regulate agricultural and veterinary chemicals in Tasmania.

The Commonwealth regulates up to the point of sale under the Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals Code Act 1994 and associated regulations. This is administered by the Australian Pesticides and Veterinary Medicines Authority (APVMA) who is the statutory authority established to assess, register and control the supply of agricultural and veterinary chemicals through a National Registration Scheme.

The Agricultural and Veterinary Chemicals (Control of Use) Act 1995 is the State legislation controlling the use of agricultural and veterinary chemicals. It is supported by a range of subordinate legislation all of which is administered by the Product Integrity Branch (Agvet Chemicals Program) within Biosecurity Tasmania and can be found on the Tasmanian Legislation website: www.legislation.tas.gov.au
