Chemical Product Supply and Use Restrictions

A number of agricultural chemical products are prohibited or restricted in Tasmania.

Some agricultural chemical products have restrictions around their:

use
sale or supply by resellers

These restrictions ensure the safety of users, crops and land.

Sale and supply only to authorised users.	Rabbit Burrow Fumigation Users, which include farmers, pest management technicians, and authorised NRE Tas employees, must hold a current “Pest Management Technician Certificate of Competency” or a valid “ChemCert” accreditation certificate. Silo & Grain Storage Structure Fumigation Users, which include farmers, Pest Management Technicians or fumigation contractors, must hold a current “Pest Management Technician Certificate of Competency” or a valid “ChemCert” accreditation certificate which includes endorsement for aluminium phosphide fumigation.	Pest Management Technician Certificates of Competency are issued annually by the Registrar of Chemical Products. ChemCert Accreditation Certificates are issued by Rural Industry Training & Education (Tas). The ChemCert aluminium phosphide fumigation endorsement for treating silos and grain storage structures can be obtained after completing a specifically designed unit of training.
4- Aminopyridine hydrochloride	Scatterbird	Only supplied to persons authorised by Biosecurity Tasmania.	Users must hold an Ag Spraying Permit.	Used by Pest Management Technicians. Permits may be issued by the Registrar of Chemical Products for a period of 5 years.
Chloropicrin	Chloropicrin Bromafume Telone C-35	Suppliers must be authorised under the Poisons Act 1971 to possess and supply. Sale and supply only to persons holding a current “Methyl Bromide User Certificate of Competency”	Users must hold a current “Methyl Bromide User Cert. of Competency”. Please Note: Because there are no training courses currently available for fumigation with chloropicrin, methyl bromide training is considered acceptable.	Used by farmers, horticulturalists and fumigation contractors. Methyl Bromide User Certificates of Competency are issued annually by the Registrar of Chemical Products.
Cyanides (sodium cyanide or potassium cyanide)			Must not be used for vertebrate pest control, unless authorised by the Chief Veterinary Officer.
2,4-D	Amicide Surpass	No restrictions on sale or supply. Application for Agricultural Spraying Permit should be provided to user at time of sale or supply.	Cannot be used between 15 September and 15 April unless users hold an Agricultural Spraying Permit authorising use during this period.	Application forms for an Agricultural Spraying Permit are available from the Agricultural and Veterinary Chemical Program. Agricultural Spraying Permits for 2,4-D are issued annually by the Registrar of Chemical Products for a specific time during each season’s period of restriction.
Methyl Bromide	Methyl Bromide 1000 Agrigas M Inbrom Tri-Brom etc Some products also contain chloropicrin	Sale and supply only to persons holding a current “Methyl Bromide User Certificate of Competency”.	Users must hold a current “Methyl Bromide User Cert. of Competency”.	Used by Pest Management Technicians and fumigation contractors. Methyl Bromide User Certificates of Competency are issued annually by the Registrar of Chemical Products.
Phosphine gas	Phosfume Eco2fume	Suppliers must be authorised under the Poisons Act 1971 to possess & supply. Sale or supply only to persons holding a “Phosphine User Certificate of Competency”.	Users must hold a current “Phosphine User Cert. of Competency”.	Used by Pest Management Technicians and fumigation contractors. Phosphine User Certificates of Competency are issued annually by the Registrar of Chemical Products.
Pindone concentrate	Pindone 25 Rabbait Aqueous Concentrate	Only supplied to persons authorised by Biosecurity Tasmania.	Users must hold an Ag Spraying Permit.	Used by licensed vertebrate pest control contractors or authorised NRE Tas employees. Permits may be issued by the Registrar of Chemical Products for a period of 5 years.
Pindone ready to use baits	Bunnybait Rabbait Oat Bait		Users must hold an Ag Spraying Permit.	Permits may be issued by the Registrar of Chemical Products for a period of 5 years.
Schedule 7 poisons (as per the Standard for the Uniform Scheduling of Drugs and Poisons)	Various	Various	Must not be applied by aerial spraying other than in accordance with a specific permit issued by the Registrar of Chemical Products.
Strychnine			Must not be used for vertebrate pest control, unless authorised by the Chief Veterinary Officer.
1080	1080 baits	Can only be supplied by authorised NRE Tas employees.	Users must hold an “Authority to Purchase, Possess and Use 1080” issued by an authorised NRE Tas employee.	Used by farmers, forestry companies & contractors, authorised NRE Tas employees.
Zinc Phosphide	Mouse Off	Can only be supplied to licensed Pest Management Technicians and authorised NRE Tas employees.	Users must hold a current “Pest Management Technician Certificate of Competency” or be an authorised NRE Tas employee.	Very rare use only in “agricultural plague” situations by farmers or Pest Management Technicians. Pest Management Technician Certificates of Competency are issued annually by the Registrar of Chemical Products.
