The Competitiveness of Tasmanian Agriculture for 2050 White Paper sets out the Tasmanian Government’s framework for continuing to foster a competitive agricultural sector and profitable farming enterprises.
This White Paper sets a robust long-term framework for the Government to work with the agricultural sector to build on our strengths and also manage risks and respond to significant disruptions and change, such as the COVID-19 pandemic.

The White Paper considers the ongoing competitiveness of our state’s land-based agricultural sector in three emerging priority areas of:
- Circular Economy and Value-Adding
- Digital Transformation
- Responsive to Change.
It also reaffirms our policy focus in the areas of:
- Research and Innovation
- Smarter Regulation
- Investing in People
- Managing Risk and Biosecurity
- Harnessing Natural Capital
- Capitalising on our Brand
- Climate-Ready Agriculture.
These strategic documents form part of the blueprint for achieving the productivity improvements required to grow the farm gate value of Tasmania's agriculture to $10 billion by 2050.
Background - Submissions
In developing the White Paper the Tasmanian Government worked collaboratively with primary industry peak bodies and the wider agricultural and research community. In January 2020 the Competitiveness of Tasmanian Agriculture for 2050 Discussion Paper was released.
Twenty-nine submissions and confidential responses to the Discussion Paper were received from stakeholders including peak bodies, industry groups, research organisations, individuals and government agencies.
