Aquaculture

Tasmania is home to Australia's largest aquaculture industry with a reputation for cultivating high-quality and high-value seafood products.

Aquaculture is the practice of farming aquatic organisms, such as fish, shellfish and seaweeds in marine or freshwater environments.

Just as agriculture takes places across paddocks or farm facilities, aquaculture takes places across marine farming leases or, in some cases, purpose-built land-based facilities such as hatcheries and on-growing sites.

Aquaculture in Tasmania is supported by the Aquaculture Branch of the Marine Resources Strategic Business Unit within the Department of Natural Resources and Environment Tasmania, which oversees the sustainable planning and development, regulation and operation of aquaculture within Tasmania.
