Draft Aquaculture Standards

New Aquaculture Standards are being drafted to enhance aquaculture biosecurity systems and environmental regulations, and to ensure aquaculture management is consistent across Tasmania.

About the Standards

The new Aquaculture Standards are part of a continuous improvement process for a sustainable aquaculture industry in Tasmania. Currently in varying stages of development, the standards build on existing regulatory requirements and formalise voluntary measures being undertaken by the industry.

Development of the new standards is an action arising from the Sustainable Industry Growth Plan for Salmon Industry 2017, which has since been replaced by the Tasmanian Salmon Industry Plan 2023.

  • Biosecurity
The objective of the Biosecurity Program is to improve the overall biosecurity of all salmon production in Tasmania by preventing, eliminating, or minimising (wherever practicable to do so) the risks posed by infectious diseases of salmonids and associated exotic aquatic pests. Biosecurity Regulations provide the legislative framework to support this Program.
  • Environment
The purpose of the Draft Environmental Standards is to support sustainable marine finfish farming in Tasmania by establishing the environmental management requirements to be applied by the Environment Protection Authority.
  • Marine Farming Operations
The Standardised Marine Farming Management Controls are a uniform and contemporary set of management controls for marine farming activities in Tasmanian state waters.
