The purpose of the Draft Environmental Standards is to support sustainable marine finfish farming in Tasmania by establishing the environmental management requirements to be applied by the Environment Protection Authority.
What are the draft Environmental Standards for Tasmanian Marine Finfish Farming 2023?
The Environmental Standards are designed to protect the Tasmanian marine and coastal environment by promoting sustainable use of Tasmania’s marine waters for finfish farming. They will further strengthen the current environmental regulatory system and provide for the regulation of potential nuisance impacts upon Tasmanian coastal communities.
Stakeholders and the wider public were invited to provide feedback on the Draft Environmental Standards. The consultation period closed on 21 March 2023 and submissions are currently being processed.
Recent changes to Tasmania’s environmental legislation allow for the making of environmental standards on a range of issues. The draft Environmental Standards are the first to be developed.
Once in effect, the Environmental Standards will be supported by Technical Standards, which are being developed by the EPA. These Technical Standards will be released publicly in due course.
2022 Position Paper
The development of the draft Environmental Standards was informed by public submissions made in response to the 2022 consultation on the Position Paper, Introducing an Environmental Standard for Marine Finfish Farming. Public consultation closed on 20 June 2022.
