Live Freshwater Fish

On 17 May 2023, all requirements and conditions for importing animals and animal products into Tasmania were fully enacted under the Tasmanian Biosecurity Act 2019, (replacing the now repealed Animal Health Act 1995).

These import requirements and conditions can now be found within one easy to access document, the Tasmanian Animal Biosecurity Manual (TABM):

​​​​Live freshwater fish may only be imported in accordance with the conditions established under the:

  General Authority for the Importation of Live Freshwater Fish   (84Kb)


In addition, only those species listed on the Inland Fisheries Permissible Fish List are allowed entry under this General Authority, and all fish must be accompanied by a completed Certificate for the Importation of Live Freshwater Fish into Tasmania (Declaration by Consignor):

Persons who are not Registered as a Fish Dealer with IFS may not import freshwater fish into Tasmania without an appropriate permit issued by the Director of Inland Fisheries.


The following fish species are prohibited in Tasmania and must not be imported:

Any species listed as a:

Controlled Species under the Inland Fisheries Act 1995 (Inl​and Fisheries (Controlled Fish) Order 2015), or a

Noxious Fish under the Living Marine Resources Management Act 1995(Fisheries (General and Fees) Regulations 2016.

Live Freshwater Invertebrates – The same rules apply for importation of Live Freshwater Invertebrates as for Live Freshwater Fish. Contact the Inland F​isheries Service for more information.


Live Goldfish
– Imports of goldfish into Tasmania may only occur from premises that have a Disease Management Plan approved by the Tasmanian Chief Veterinary Officer, and who also hold a valid Individual Per​mit to import goldfish.
