Macquarie Island Specimens

Specimens including animals or parts of animals may be imported into mainland Tasmania from Macquarie Island without further restriction if they are:
(a) Preserved in any of the following fixative solutions*:
(i) Methanol, ethanol, or isopropyl alcohol at a concentration of at least 70%,
(ii)
Glutaraldehyde at a minimum concentration of 2.5%,
(iii)
Formaldehyde at a concentration of at least 5%,
(iv)
Osmium tetroxide at a minimum concentration of 1% (electron microscopy only),
(v)
Bouin's Solution,
(vi) Steedman's Solution (plankton only),
(vii) Davidson's Fixative;
or
(b) Consigned to a place for the performance of biosecurity approved by an Australian Government Agency under the
Biosecurity Act 2015;
or
(c) To be held in a secure premises approved by Biosecurity Tasmania while awaiting shipment out of Tasmania;
or are
(d) Dead invertebrates.
Upon arrival in Tasmania each consignment must have on the outside of the packaging:
-
a clear description of the contents
(common and scientific names), and
-
contact details of the importer, and
- a copy of any documentation relevant to the approval of the collection and/or importation if applicable, and
-
no soil or plant material is to be within the consignment without approval.
- Upon request consignments must be presented to a Biosecurity Tasmania Inspector for inspection at an approved place.
*Note: Use of RNALater as a preservative requires assessment on a case by case basis prior to import. Potential importers must lodge a completed Application for Special Authority to email AnimalDisease.Enquiries@nre.tas.gov.au for consideration by the Chief Veterinary Officer. Any approval to import will be under conditions specified within a Special Authority.
