Biosecurity (Livestock Traceability) Regulations 2024

​​​​​​​​Purpose of the R​egulations

The purpose of the Biosecurity (Livestock Traceability) Regulations 2024 (the Regulations) is to strengthen the traceability of identifiable livestock over their life cycle and through the supply chain. Traceability is critical for biosecurity and market integrity. 

What are identifiable livestock?

Regulation 12 provides for the Minister to declare a species or class of livestock to be identifiable for the purposes of the Regulations. 

Identifiable livestock are:

  • sheep

  • goats

  • cattle, including bobby calves

  • pigs.

Who do the Regulations apply to?

The Regulations apply to anyone who owns, supplies or holds identifiable livestock, including:

  • ​​the supply chain: 

    • owners

    • operators

    • livestock agents

    • transporters

    • depots

    • saleyards

    • processing operations

  • ​livestock events.

Even if there is only one of these identifiable livestock, the Regulations apply to you.

The Regulations are divided into seven parts.

Part 4 - Movement of Identifiable Livestock and Livestock​

Part 5 - Operations Required to Report Death of Identifiable Livestock​

Part 6 – Registers​

Part 7 – Miscellaneous including advertising supply of identifiable livestock

We understand the language used in legislation can be confusing. You can refer to definitions or words and terms in the interpretation​ sections of the Regulations or contact us for clarification. 

Penalties

If the requirements of the Regulations are not met by owners/operators, fines can be issued for non compliance. Biosecurity Tasmania's authorised officers have responsibility for overseeing that the requirements of the Regulations are being met.

Tasmanian standards

The Biosecurity (Livestock Traceability) Regulations 2024 are supported Tasmanian Standards and provide the legal requirements for correctly identifying identifiable livestock. The Standards should be read in conjunction with the Regulations.
