A Property Identification Code (PIC) is an eight-character code used to identify the location of a property.
A PIC is attached to a property rather than an owner/operator.
PIC registration also provides the species of identifiable livestock on the property and contact details for the person responsible for the livestock.
Why do I need a PIC?
The
Biosecurity (Livestock Traceability) Regulations 2024 require that if you have identifiable livestock on a premises, you must have a PIC.

A PIC is critical for livestock traceability in a biosecurity incident such as an emergency disease outbreak, chemical residue problem or food safety issue. Owners and operators can be quickly contacted and provided with information.
Fines can be issued for not meeting your PIC obligations.
What premises are required to have a PIC?
The following premises must have a PIC if they hold identifiable livestock:
event premises, such as showgrounds, markets and fairs
livestock depots
farms, including hobby farms or properties with one or more of these livestock (even pet livestock)
livestock processing premises
livestock supply premises
saleyards.
PIC applications, cancellations, renewals, amendments and updates
You can apply for, cancel, renew, amend or update a PIC in two ways. You can either:
PIC renewal forms will be posted to PIC holders when they are due - you don't need to do anything about renewing your PIC until that time.
If your PIC application is approved, you will receive an 8-character code to use when purchasing eID or completing a movement document.
Cancelling a PIC

Changing PIC details/PIC amendments
A PIC amendment refers to a change made to a PIC record.
You have 14 days to advise of any changes that are different from the approved application.
The following amendments have a fee of $39.20:
adding a person/party to a PIC
adding a Property ID (PID) to a PIC
registering for NLIS authorisation
adding cattle, sheep, goats or pigs to your PIC.
The following amendments do not have a fee:
updating contact person, postal address and business details
removing a Property ID (PID) from a PIC
updating livestock numbers and types or when adding additional primary produce other than cattle, sheep, goats and pigs
removing a person/party from a PIC.

Complete the relevant PIC form and take it to a Service Tasmania service centre and pay the relevant fee.

PICs for other primary produce:
You have the option to apply for a PIC for other primary produce such as horses, poultry, alpacas, farmed deer (i.e. not sheep, goats, cattle or pigs). PIC fees do not apply for other primary produce.

PIC Fees
The Biosecurity (Livestock Traceability) Regulations 2024 include PIC fees. These fees were introduced on 1 July 2026.

All fees in this table will be subject to legislated annual increases for CPI. The value of fee units are set by the Fee Units Act 1997.

PIC fees only apply for identifiable livestock – cattle, sheep, goats and pigs.
NLIS Authorisation
When you apply for a PIC you can also apply for NLIS authorisation.
This authorisation is different to applying for an NLIS account. If you keep identifiable livestock (sheep, goats, cattle or pigs), you are required to have a NLIS account to purchase approved eID/identifiers and move them from the PIC. You apply separately to Integrity Systems Company for a NLIS account.
