Biosecurity (Livestock Traceability) Regulations

Public consultation on the draft Biosecurity (Livestock Traceability) Regulations closed at 5pm on Sunday 25 August.

In Tasmania, livestock traceability is currently regulated under the Animal (Brands and Movement) Act 1984 and the General Biosecurity Direction (Livestock Traceability) 03/22.

New Biosecurity (Livestock Traceability) Regulations are being developed as subordinate legislation to the Biosecurity Act 2019

The draft Regulations include the following key areas:

  • Property Identification Codes (PICs)
  • Identification of livestock
  • Requirements for livestock owners and supply chain participants
  • Tasmanian and national livestock registers

The new Regulations provide a framework that enable some obligations to be met via subordinate documents. Detailed requirements on how to identify cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs will be outlined in a set of animal identification standards which will be published on the NRE Tas website. The standards are given a head of power via clause 15 of the new Regulations.

Once enacted, the Biosecurity (Livestock Traceability) Regulations will replace the Animal (Brands and Movement) Act 1984 and the General Biosecurity Direction (Livestock Traceability) 03/22.

Feedback period closed
