Junior Biosecurity Heroes

Hi there, junior biosecurity heroes!

Are you looking for something to do this school holidays? If you want to have fun and learn how you can help protect Tasmania from biosecurity baddies, then you’ve come to the right place! Discover the role you can play in protecting our environment by completing these awesome activities we have created just for you.

Buzz off fruit fly

Did you know that if you bring fresh fruit and veggies into Tasmania in your luggage you could accidently bring pests such as fruit fly with you too? Fruit flies ruin our delicious locally grown fruit by laying their eggs inside. That’s why we have detector dogs that are trained to sniff out fruit and veggies at the airports. Remember- If you go on holidays, in Australia or overseas, make sure you don’t bring back any fresh fruit or veggies with you!

Bee a biosecurity hero

Bees are natures superheroes. Not only do they make delicious honey, but they are also incredible pollinators- which means they help flowers make seeds and yummy fruits like apples, strawberries and watermelons! Busy bees fly from flower to flower spreading pollen so that plants can grow the foods we love.

The biosecurity basics

We all have a role to play in helping to protect Tasmania from pests and diseases such as foot-and-mouth disease and varroa mite. Foot-and-mouth disease would make our farm animals very sick, and varroa mite is a bee biosecurity baddie. The biosecurity basics are easy steps you can take each day to play your part and help you meet your general biosecurity duty

Match the list of activities with the correct biosecurity basics icon in the activity below to learn how you can become a biosecurity hero, then see if you can crack the secret code to reveal the message.
