NRE Tas Roles in the Planning System and Significant Project Assessment

​​​​​​​​​​​​​​Tasmania’s overarching planning framework is known as the Resource Management and Planning System (RMPS). This ​framework of legislation and policy is inten​​​ded to ensure use and development of Tasmanian land is strategic and sustainable. ​​​​​​

Depending on the location, scale and use, development may be regulated under one or more Tasmanian Acts that form part of the RMPS. The Land Use and Planning Approvals Act 1993 is the principal planning Act, followed​ by the State Policies and Projects Act 1993​, the Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994, and others. 

NRE Tas administers several Acts relevant to the RMPS. These include but are not limited to the:
Planning decisions affect everyday life and in​volve the public and every tier of government. They consider a broad range of issues, such as housing, transport, natural and heritage values, environmental hazards, population trends and infrastructure.​
