Tasmania has exceptional natural assets and over half of the land in Tasmania is protected in public and private reserves.
The Government response to the report:
reflects the care for the environment demonstrated by some of the significant work already underway
acknowledges that protection of the environment requires continuous improvement to ensure that the work of the past is built on into the future

The response focuses on four priority areas:
develop a long-term vision and strategy for Tasmania's environment
develop an environmental data strategy
focus on securing Other Effective Conservation Measures and covenants through the Private Land Conservation Program to deliver greater protection for underrepresented ecosystems
improve native vegetation mapping and information
Next steps
Commitments to address the recommendations of the State of the Environment Report 2024 will be considered as part of the 2025-26 budget process.
To enable scrutiny and transparency, this response will also be tabled in both Houses of Parliament in early 2025.

The State of the Environment Report 2024 was submitted to the Minister for Housing and Planning on 29 August 2024 and tabled in both Houses of Parliament on 17 September 2024. The Report is an important means of documenting baseline environmental data, trends, and risks across Tasmania.
