Next Steps and How To Prepare

Our next steps include:

  • Continued engagement with key stakeholders

  • Development of draft legislation detailing compliance, phased out items and materials, and timeframes for the phase out

  • Public consultation on draft legislation, phase out roadmap, and regulatory impact statement

  • Development of a business support program

  • Legislation considered by the Tasmanian Parliament

How can I prepare for the phase out?

To prepare for the phase out, start having conversations with your friends and family about how to reduce your use of single-use plastics at home. Look at how the food and drinks you purchase are packaged at the supermarket. Are there other non-single-use plastic options, or can I take a reusable container

Here are some further tips on how you can reduce single-use plastics:

  • Ask your local café to use your reusable coffee cup when you next order a takeaway coffee

  • Challenging yourself to bring a reusable lunch container to your favourite takeaway café

  • Use a reusable bag from home when you shop

  • Avoid using a plastic straw unless you require one

  • Refill your water bottle each time, rather than buying a new plastic one.

How can businesses that use single-use plastics prepare?

  • Start working with your suppliers to see how your business can reduce its use of single-use plastics

  • Adopt reusable items, materials, and/or systems where possible

  • Manufacturers may consider how to develop innovative and sustainable non-plastic items

  • Create a Sustainability Action or Waste Management Plan that includes a reduction in plastics within your operations

  • Educate your staff on the environmental, health, and economic benefits of using less single-use plastics and how they can help.
