Gate Fee Waiver - September 2024

​​​​​​​​As part of the recovery response to the extreme weather that occurred between 30 August and 2 September 2024, the Tasmanian Government announced the waiving of the gate fees usually charged to the public across Tasmania, for disposing of ​waste resulting from that extreme weather event. The waiver will be in place for eligible waste received by waste transfer stations and public landfills until 30 November 2024. 

What waste types are eligible?

Green waste

The following items are eligible: 
  • Trees that have fallen because of soil saturation and/or strong wind.
  • Vegetative debris that has been accumulated by flood water. 

Food waste

The following items are eligible:
  • ​Food that has spoiled because of power outage.

House and shed debris

The following items are eligible:
  • ​Upholstery (furniture with fabric and/or padding), curtains, mattresses and carpet damaged as a result of the extreme weather event.
  • ​Non-commercial building material (homes and sheds) damaged by flood water or strong wind.

Other storm debris

The following items are eligible:
  • ​Litter and debris washed or blown onto properties by flood water or strong wind.

Materials that can be recycled or composted should continue to be diverted from landfill when possible, even when covered by this waiver.


​What waste types are NOT eligible?

Green waste

The following items are NOT eligible: 
  • General garden waste.
  • Lawn clippings.
  • Green waste collected by an existing kerbside service.

Food waste

The following items are NOT eligible:
  • Food purchased after the extreme weather event.
  • Food types that do not require refrigeration to prevent spoiling.
  • Food waste from households that did not experience power outage.
  • Food waste collected by an existing kerbside service.

House and shed debris

The following items are NOT eligible:
  • Upholstery (i.e. furniture with fabric and/or padding), curtains, mattresses and carpet not showing signs of storm damage (e.g. water stains).
  • Electrical and white goods.
  • Waste collected by an existing kerbside service.

Other storm debris

The following items are NOT eligible:
  • Tyres.
  • Commercial construction and demolition waste.
  • Clean fill.
  • Waste collected by an existing kerbside service.
