Access to Photography
In the past, if you wanted to look at the aerial photography covering Tasmania, it was only possible by viewing the hard copy photographic prints held by Land Tasmania in the Lands Building in Hobart.
Land Tasmania has now converted the hard copy photos to digital imagery (see History of Aerial Photography) both to preserve the films and to create a spatial index for the photography - thereby enabling online viewing and access to the aerial photography library.
The Aerial Photo Viewer allows anyone to search the aerial photograph database and download aerial photographs or newer digital imagery covering their area of interest.
The aerial photo database construction is almost complete, images from 1945 to 2020 can be searched for, viewed and freely downloaded using the Viewer. Indexes for photographs prior to 1969 are currently beiing added to.
If you have a question about an area of interest or photography availability please email aerialphotos@nre.tas.gov.au
Searching and Downloading Aerial Photography
The Aerial Photo Viewer (APV) is an online app that allows you to search, view and download full resolution aerial photography, georeferenced aerial orthophotography, orthophotos, and digital orthoimagery over Tasmania.
The Viewer's indexes show the coverage of each aerial photo frame, orthophoto and digital imagery tile enabling you to quickly view a low-resolution thumbnail of the selected image and also download full resolution copies of the desired frame(s) in digital Tiff and GeoTiff format.
For more information on using the viewer see APV App Help document.
