Held on behalf of (HOBO) means a formal arrangement between a party and the Land Titles Office (LTO) for the LTO to 'hold' certificates of title for that party from an agreed date.
An application process was developed to record certificates of title as HOBO and on application by a number of mortgagee parties, this conversion of a bulk amount of certificates of title has occurred. Any certificates of title held as a result of such an application for bulk conversion to HOBO resulted in the issuing of a new edition of the certificate of title, with the application recorded against the historical folio in the Register of land. For more information on Volume Folio and Edition numbers as they relate to certificates of title visit The Register webpage.
For certificates of title which are held by the LTO under HOBO arrangements, the lodging party or Responsible Subscriber will need to arrange the request for production of certificate of title. For more information visit the Production of Title webpage.

Will a prior edition of the certificate of title be accepted for lodgement with a Discharge of Mortgage?
Lodgement: Notwithstanding the conversion to 'held on behalf of' (HOBO), the Land Titles Office will accept with discharges of mortgage the recently cancelled edition of the relevant paper Certificate of Title, provided that the sole reason for the cancellation and the issuing of a new edition was the conversion to HOBO.
Settlement: The decision to accept an earlier edition of a paper certificate of title at settlement lies with the party representative. Although the Land Titles Office (LTO) cannot provide advice to any party representative regarding the acceptance or otherwise of certificates of title or Production Slip Receipts, representatives encountering this situation at settlement can contact the LTO for confirmation that the held new edition of a certificate of title has been issued solely due to the conversion to 'held on behalf of' (HOBO).
