The Place Names Act 2020 (the Act) came into effect on the 1st July 2020 modernising the administrative processes of official place naming in Tasmania.
The Act is accompanied by the
Tasmanian Place Naming Guidelines, which modernise the processes for the proposal, consultation and advertising of place names.

Place Names Advisory Panel
The Act establishes a Place Names Advisory Panel, which includes the Surveyor-General as Chairman, a State Service employee, responsible for the spatial data and mapping of the State, representatives from the Parks and Wildlife Service and Local Government Association of Tasmania, along with community membership focused around knowledge and experience in outdoor recreation, heritage or historical matters, orthography and linguistics.
Registrar of Place Names
The Act enables a Registrar of Place Names to maintain the Register and the Guidelines and process and progress place names to the Panel.
