Addressing is a key part in the Nation's infrastructure and important to every member of the public in that it enables deliveries to be made, services to be provided and residences located. Addressing is critical for emergency service providers.
Property addresses
In Tasmania property addresses are assigned by Local Government. The process for this is varied with some councils assigning addresses for all lots when a subdivision plan is sealed, other smaller councils may not allocate address numbers until a development commences.
Address information is advised to the Location Services Branch (LSB) from council by email to Addressing@nre.tas.gov.au, either on a daily basis when addresses have been allocated, or on up to a monthly basis with lists of addresses that have been allocated within that period.
Property address assignments and alterations are maintained by LSB staff in the Valuation Information System for Tasmania (VISTAS) and disseminated via theLIST and the Geocoded National Address File (G-NAF) dataset.
Postal addresses
Postal addresses are maintained independently within VISTAS by the Office of the Valuer-General. Typically the postal address is assigned from the Notice of Sale and only altered upon advice from the owner or from a reconciliation process undertaken after revaluation when undelivered mail is returned.
National addressing standard
Tasmania employs AS/NZS 4819-2011 Australian/New Zealand Standard - Rural and urban addressing. The Standard specifies requirements and guidance to enable addressing authorities to assign addresses that can be readily and unambiguously identified and located.
The Standard is intended primarily for use by those agencies that are responsible for addressing to enable consistency across the country. A copy of the standard can be obtained from www.standards.org.au.
Address geocodes
Geocoded Addresses are one of the ANZLIC Foundation Spatial Data Framework (FSDF) data sets of which a national roadmap exists to meet future goals for this data. In Tasmania address geocodes are maintained and supplied to the Geocoded
National Address File (G-NAF) by Land Tasmania.
