The introduction of an Environmental Standard for Marine Finfish Farming will build on existing requirements to ensure a contemporary monitoring and environmental management framework that is clear, robust and fosters environmentally sustainable finfish farming practices.
The proposed Environmental Standard for Marine Finfish Farming needs a legal mechanism to give it effect. The Environmental Management and Pollution Control Act 1994 (EMPCA) is proposed to be amended to allow for the development of Environmental Standards. The detailed draft Environmental Standard for Marine Finfish Farming will be released for statutory consultation following this amendment to EMPCA (The proposed EMPCA amendments include a statutory consultation period for the making of Environmental Standards). This consultation is expected in the second half of 2022.
To start the consultation process about the proposed content of the Environmental Standard, we are seeking feedback on the Introducing an Environmental Standard for Marine Finfish Farming – Position Paper.
As part of the new Aquaculture standards approach, compatibility across proposed measures has also been considered during the preparation of the DRAFT Standardised Marine Farming Management Controls and DRAFT Biosecurity Program.
