Recreational Fishing Seasons

​​​​Fisheries may be closed at spawning times to protect breeding stock or to limit the catch for a fishery. They may also be closed for public health reasons - see Biotoxin Fishery Events. If not listed, no recreational season applies.

Rock Lobster and Giant Crab

2021-22 Season Dates  

Waters outside the East Coast Stock Rebuilding Zone (ECSRZ):
- Open from 6 November 2021.
East Coast Stock Rebuilding Zone (ECSRZ):
- Open from 4 December 2021.

Information about transiting between seasonally closed waters.

Eastern Region (including ECSRZ)
- Closes 30 April 2022.
Western Region (Females)
- Closes 30 April 2022.
Western Region (Males)
- Closes 31 August 2022.

Squid / Calamari Spawning Closures
East Coast
Upper south east coast waters including Great Oyster Bay and Mercury Passage from 15 October to 14 November inclusive each year.​
North Coast

2021: Tasmania's north coast will be closed from 1 - 31 October 2021 inclusive from Cape Grim east to Cape Naturaliste - see map​.
Striped TrumpeterClosed from 1 September to 31 October inclusive each year.
Scallops 2022: Open from 9 April to 31 July 2022.
The D'Entrecasteaux Channel remains closed.
Banded Morwong
Closed from 1 March to 30 April inclusive each year.
AbaloneOpen all year round.
OctopusOpen to fishing all year round.
