About the Tasmanian Racing Appeal Board

​​​​​​​The Tasmanian Racing Appeal Board (TRAB, the Board​) is an independent body established to hear appeals from individuals who are aggrieved by

  • a decision of the stewards to impose a fine on the person or impose a suspension or disqualification on the person or on a horse or greyhound owned, leased or trained by the person, or  

  • a decision of Tasracing or a registered club to issue the person with a warning-off notice, or an exclusion notice, or  

  • a decision of Tasracing with regard to wagering operators approvals and conditions (refer to Section 77(2) of the Racing Regulation and Integrity Act 2024), or

The TRAB operates under Sections 70 to 102 of the Racing Regulation and Integrity Act 20​​24

​​​About the Board   

The TRAB is to consist of six members, as follows:  

  • The Chairperson  

  • At least two Deputy Chairpersons  

  • Up to three members  

The Chairperson and Deputy Chairpersons are to be Australian legal practitioners of at least five years. 

All members are appointed by the Governor, for a term of up to three years, and may be reappointed.

Advisers:  

Persons with experience in each of the three codes of racing, are appointed by the Governor as Advisers. Advisers attend hearings of the TRAB, when requested, to provide advice on racing matters. Advisers are not members of the TRAB.

  • Harness Code Adviser – Mike Stiles  
  • Thoroughbred Code Adviser – Mike Stiles

​Industry consultation

The Chairperson and Deputy Chairpersons of the TRAB are required to consult with the following persons at least twice a year:  

  • Chairpersons of racing industry associations and racing clubs  
  • Chief Racing Integrity Officer  
  • Tasmanian Racing Integrity Commissioner  
  • Representative of the stewards for each code of racing  

​The Secretary of the TRAB will write to those invited to attend the consultation sessions.​
