Stream gauging stations provides water quantity information for:
the design of water supplies, dams and other engineering works
monitoring the sustainability of water allocation and water management
implementing water restrictions
flood mitigation and drainage
monitoring climate change and drought
assessment of changes in water yields resulting from altered land use

Access to Data
Time series water level (stage) data is recorded on dataloggers and regularly uploaded to a database via telemetry. The stage data is used to calculate the volume of water, such as Mega litres/day or cumecs. This is achieved by using a rating table, unique for every station.
Ratings are continuously checked for accuracy by hydrographers who conduct discharge measurements at different stage heights. The resulting flow data is available on the Water Information Tasmania Web Portal and the river flow plots on the NRE Tas web site.
See the Water Information Tasmania Web Portal for a list of current water monitoring sites.
