To take and possess Tasmanian native reptiles and amphibians you must agree to abide by the Code of Practice for Herpetology (See
Herpetology in Tasmania - Code of Practice) and hold a permit authorising you to do so. There are several different permit types available, they include:
Special Purposes Wildlife Permit for Herpetofauna;
Keep and Display Herpetofauna at an Educational Facility; and
Keeping and Displaying Herpetofauna for a Business.
Note: Permits are valid for a maximum of one year. All permits expire on 30 June of each year.
Special Purposes Wildlife Permit for Herpetofauna
A Special Purposes Wildlife Permit for Herpetofauna authorises the collection and keeping of Tasmanian reptiles and amphibians.

Keep and Display Herpetofauna at an Educational
Facility
A Herpetofauna Educational Facility Permit authorises the collection and keeping of Tasmanian reptiles and amphibians at an educational facility for educational purposes. A specified employee of the facility is permitted to keep wildlife onsite, as well as at their private address.
This permit does not authorise the possession of snakes.

Keeping and Displaying Herpetofauna for a Business
A Herpetofauna Educational Display Authorisation authorises a business to keep and display Tasmanian reptiles and amphibians for the purpose of educational display. This permit may also authorise the possession and display of specific species of restricted (special purpose) wildlife that have been legally imported into Tasmania.
