Herpetofauna Permits

​​​​​​​​​​​​To take and possess Tasmanian native reptiles and amphibians you must agree to abide by the Code of Practice for Herpetology (See Herpetology in Tasmania - Code of Practice) and hold a permit authorising you to do so. There are several different permit types available, they include:​

  • Special Purposes Wildlife Permit for Herpetofauna;

  • Keep and Display H​​erpetofauna at an ​​​Educational Fa​​​cility; and

  • Keeping and Dis​playing Herpetofauna for a Business​​.

​Special Purposes W​​ildlife Permit ​​​for ​​Herpetofauna

A Special Purposes Wild​life Permit for Herpetofauna authorises the collection and keeping of Tasmanian reptiles and amphibians.​

How do​ I a​​​​​pply?

Complete the Special Purposes Wildlife Permit for Herpetofauna Application Form to apply for a permit to keep Tasmanian reptiles and amphibians.​

All Special Purposes Wildlife Permits for Herpetofauna are valid for a maximum of one year and expire on the 30ths of June each year.

There is no fee for this permit.​

 Special Purposes Wildlife Permit for Herpetofauna Application Form 

​ Keep and Display H​​erpetofauna at an ​​​Educational Fa​​​cility 

A Herpetofauna Educational Fa​cility Permit authorises the collection and keeping of Tasmanian reptiles and amphibians at an educational facility for educational purposes. A specified employee of the facility is permitted to keep wildlife onsite, as well as at their private address.

This permit does not authorise the possession of snakes.

All permits to Keep and Display Herpetofauna at an Educational Facility are valid for a maximum of 1 year and all expire on the 31st of January each year.

A fee is payable for the Wildlife Display Permit that included as part of your application​​​.​​​

​ Keeping and Dis​playing Herpetofauna for a Business 

A Herpetofauna Educational Display Authorisation authorises a business to keep and display Tasmanian reptiles and amphibians for the purpose of educational display. This permit may also authorise the possession and display of specific species of restricted (special purpose) wildlife that have been legally imported into Tasmania.

All permits to Keep and Display Herpetofauna for a Business are valid for a maximum of one year and all expire on the 30th June each year. ​

Complete the Keeping and Displaying Herpetofauna - For a Business Application Form to apply for a permit to keep and display authorised reptiles and amphibians.

A fee is payable for the Wildlife Display Permit that included as part of your application​​.
