​Application for Scientific Permit – Available for Public Comment

Public comment ont the following application for a Scientific Research (Fauna) Permit is open until 19 Janurary.

Launceston and Tamar Valley 

Various land tenure – landholder approval to be sought prior to any project activities. 

Title of research: 
Population assessment of Eastern bettongs (Bettongia gaimardi)

Aim of project:
Undertake a population assessment of Eastern bettongs, consisting of camera monitoring, trapping, microchipping and genetic sampling across the species range.

Justification: 
To gather data to develop a contemporary understanding of the species distribution and demographics across the species range in Tasmania. 

Maximum likely numbers of individuals involved: 

25 sites to be camera monitored, up to 20 cameras per site, deployed for up to 30 days.

15 sites to be progressed to live trapping, up to 50 traps per site, operated for 4 consecutive nights.

Activities undertaken and methods:
The following activities will be undertaken; 
Camera monitoring
Live trapping
Genetic sampling
Microchipping

Fate of animals:
All animals to be released at point of capture. 

Likely impact on species involved (including any by-catch):
Methods for monitoring have been designed to minimise adverse events. ​​
