Tammar wallaby (Macropus eugenii)

Assessment Summary

A risk assessment for the Tammar wallaby, Macropus eugenii has been conducted by the Department.

As a key component of risk assessment for import into Tasmania, conventional climate modelling was applied to compare the state’s environment with the species’ natural range CLIMATCH revealed “high” potential for suitable habitat across the entire state.

The risk assessment determined the Tammar wallaby as not dangerous to humans, having a high establishment risk and with an extreme consequence of establishment.  It was therefore proposed the species be assigned to a extreme threat category.

This risk assessment concludes that Tammar wallabies are an extreme threat to Tasmania and have been placed in Schedule 9 (Restricted animals) of the Nature Conservation (Wildlife) Regulations 2021, therefore import is prohibited.
