Red-crested Finch (Coryphospingus cucullatus)

Assessment Summary

The Red-crested Finch, (Coryphospingus cucullatus), is a small finch native to Argentina, Bolivia, Brazil, Ecuador, French Guiana, Guyana, Paraguay, Peru, Suriname, and Uruguay.

The male bird has a scarlet crest, cut off sharply at the nape; the forehead and the sides of the crest are black, and the back of the head is dark brown. It also has a narrow white eye-ring. The remaining parts of the head, rump and under parts are brick red; the nape; mantle and wings are brown and the tail is dull black.

The female lacks the crest, with its upper parts dull brown, lighter than the male, blackish tail feathers edged with chestnut, and dirty pinkish underparts. 

The risk assessment concludes that the Red-crested Finch is a 'low' threat to Tasmania and recommends that imports be permitted.
