Environmental Management

There are various ways that the Tasmanian Government is working on maintaining the health of our environment. Through the Department of Natural Resources and Environment, Tasmania has made the commitment to tackle a broad range of waste management and resource recovery issues. This is done in partnership with Local Government, business, the community, and the Australian Government.

Tasmanian State and Local Government are already well-advanced in actioning key policy and legislative actions to tackle the priority waste and resource recovery issues for Tasmania. NRE Tas has a strong focus on waste and resource recovery due to the pollution that waste can cause, the loss of amenity and the difficulty in finding new and acceptable landfill sites, the impact of methane on our climate, the loss of the earth’s precious resources, and the impact on marine life when materials are discarded.

In response to the national policy context, the Tasmanian Government developed a draft Waste Action Plan in 2019 with complementary key actions and targets, available on the Waste Action Plan webpage. This currently informs the Department’s work, which includes:
Information on the national context can be found on the National Waste Policy website, and the associated National Waste Policy Action Plan website. These national policy documents articulate five principles underpinning waste management, recycling and resource recovery in a circular economy, and seven national targets and associated actions for waste management and resource recovery.
